![]() ![]() It’s a shame, too, because this sort of additional content is exactly what I like to see and am more than willing to pay for over the option of adding things like timers and in-game currencies in order to try and squeeze some revenue out of a free game.Īnyway, all the new content is totally optional and Kung Fury remains the slick little high-scoring brawler it released as back in May. However, that hasn’t stopped some folks from crapping on Kung Fury’s rating in the App Store, as unfortunately we’ve fostered a culture of people who feel slighted when asked to pay anything for a video game on mobile. It’s not surprising that all this new content is paid DLC, as the game was free and ad-supported to begin with. Also, any purchases will disable the pop-up ads that occur after each round in endless. These guys come at a cost as well, and it’ll run you 99¢ apiece to unlock each of these characters in endless. In addition to the story mode DLC, the 3 new playable characters can also be unlocked in the game’s original endless mode, which is still present in this updated version of the game. Oh, and it should be mentioned that all the story dialogue is very poorly voice acted (on purpose!) by all the original cast members of the film. ![]() Each of those levels focuses on one of the new playable characters mentioned above: Barbarianna has Chapter 2, Hackerman has Chapter 3, Triceracop has Chapter 4, and Kung Fury reenters the fray for the final battle in Chapter 5. Once you’ve completed that, you’ll have to buy the rest of the campaign for $2.99, and that features 4 additional levels. The way story mode works is that the first chapter which features Kung Fury as the playable character is free. Now they must fight their way out of the arcade game by… playing the arcade game! So meta! The story mode sees our titular character Kung Fury once again face off against the evil sentient arcade machine, which Kung Fury and his crew Triceracop, Hackerman and Barbarianna have actually been beamed into against their wishes. Well, Kung Fury is finally starting to realize its potential with a huge update released this week that adds brand new story mode and 3 playable characters into the mix. It’s just that it felt like it could have been so much more a full-fledged brawler like Final Fight or Streets of Rage. Now, that wasn’t exactly a bad thing, as Kung Fury was a lot of fun for a high-scoring game and the production values were totally on-point, nailing the look and feel of an ’80s-era arcade game. Remember that wacky, over-the-top short film riff on kung-fu movies called ‘Kung Fury’ which took the internet by storm back in May? You may also recall that a mobile tie-in game was released alongside it called Kung Fury: Street Rage (Free), and at that time it was little more than an endless, high-score-chasing beat ’em up with left/right combat mechanics similar to something like One Finger Death Punch (Free) or Fatal Fight (Free). ![]()

![]() Honestly, this is usually the case, but with over 200 hours already put into it, I’ve not felt compelled or forced to open my wallet and drop some money into the game. ![]() Now I know what you’re thinking probably something along the lines of “but aren’t all F2P games simply pay-to-win (P2W)?”. Also, Bless is completely free to play (F2P). Yes, it’s the same studio and set in the same universe, but it’s a completely different experience, and not just because it’s an Xbox One exclusive on console. ![]() Now, this isn’t the failed PC MMO Bless Online. If you’ve played numerous MMO’s before, you’ve probably heard of Bless before. Truth be told, I wanted to hit end-game and max level before writing this review, but as it turns out, Bless has a serious grind to it, along with some gating that forces you to halt rapid leveling and progression, which is nothing new to me, but others will, and do already, find the grind very taxing and frustrating. Bless Unleased (simply referred to as Bless from here onwards) was no different, as I’ve actually been playing it well over a month now, and usually I review games quite quickly purposely, but being an MMO, it’s not one that can be rushed. To say that it’s my favorite genre is an understatement, so when a new one comes along, I tend to dive into the deep end feet first and completely immerse myself in its gameplay and world. ![]() Since then, I’ve literally put thousands of hours into various MMO’s over the past two decades. It may be a solution, but it is both inefficient and non-standard. One could imagine that if Base 64 encoding was part of the SOAP standard, then there would be some standard way to indicate this SOAP message processors. In addition, the parser on the other side needs to know about the encoding so that it can decode the payload. Base 64 encoded binary winds up being, on average, 37% larger (number of bytes) than the raw, non-encoded binary data. So there, problem solved, right? Yes, but … it's a rather inefficient solution. Every byte gets mapped to these characters, so there's no way for any byte to get misinterpreted as anything that would choke an XML parser. It involves using a 64 character “alphabet” consisting of the lower case characters, a-z, the upper case characters, A-Z, the numbers 0-9, and the + and / symbols. This technique has been around (as a standard) since the 80's. One common way to do this is to use Base 64 encoding. There is a solution to this variant of our problem. We need a way to make sure those bytes aren't interpreted at all.īase 64 encoding: Works but bloated SOAP attachments That would cause any parser to think that the CDATA section had ended and the subsequent characters would be interpreted just like in our first attempt. It might seem unlikely, but our binary data could have just such a byte sequence in the middle of it. It does this by looking for the byte sequence corresponding to the characters ]]>. However, the parser has to figure out where the CDATA section ends. Now if we have bytes that would be interpreted as a > (for example,) they will be ignored. This modified approach might look like Listing 2. What about using a CDATA block? That will tell the parser to ignore the characters inside the block. So this approach will not work.īut wait, maybe there's a way to fix this approach. Any such byte sequence in text node above will cause the parser on the other side to break. So our binary data could easily have characters that correspond to reserved XML characters, like or &. An XML parser, whether it's a DOM, SAX, or StAX parser, must use the character set encoding of the document to interpret all the bytes in the document as characters. Remember that characters are also bytes, just like binary data. One way you might try is to simply dump the binary into a text node. Naive approaches to sending attachments with SOAP You see web pages do this all the time it can't be that hard, right? Let's explore some solutions to this problem. You just need a way to combine it with binary data. So should you just give up on sending attachments with SOAPall together? Of course not, there are too many advantages to SOAP. You'd like to use SOAP attachments, but it's limited to text. Ok, so you need to send binary data between applications. This poses a problem when your message format is text.Ĭombining binary data with SOAP attachments For example, let's say your message needs to include an image. This not only makes for large messages, but makes it incompatible with binary data. ![]() One of the main criticisms of SOAP is its use of XML, and that complaint often carries over when it comes to sending attachments with SOAP. SOAP standardizes the protocol (HTTP) and the data format (XML.) Standardization around SOAP has taken away a lot of the guesswork in sending data between systems. ![]() ![]() The abstract way in which modern culture relates to nature-evident even in the language we use to talk about it, in distant terms like ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ and ‘Anthropocene’ itself-is both a result of anthropocentric thinking and the reason for the Anthropocene problem in the first place. 5 But really, it was always a communications issue, in that relationship with the land is culturally shaped, through language, history, and belief systems-and science comes second, as a component of one particular cultural frame and as a way of measuring the consequences of that frame. David Schindler has touched on this point, saying that the ecological crisis is no longer a scientific issue it is now a communications issue. For it is obvious that a particular culture has led to the destruction, and this culture is not universal, and it did not exist throughout time. 4 However, what the academic discourse has yet to fully grasp-and a misunderstanding now shared by the public-is the extent to which the problem is cultural. 3 Over the past few years, there has been a flurry of discourse in many academic fields on the Anthropocene: the concept ‘has been institutionalized in a short period of time: networks have been formed, conferences organized, websites established, research programs elaborated and journals launched’ to discuss it, and the concept has now passed into the general cultural sphere as well, through art, film, and museum exhibitions. The term was first proposed by Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer in 2000, 2 and affirmed by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in the journal Science in early 2016. The planet has now entered the so-called Anthropocene geological epoch, in which the earth’s very processes have been altered by humans. 5 Personal communication, March 23, 2017.ĢSince that conference in 2007, it is clear that modern relationship with the land has not been righted, even though more has been written about it, including by a host of academics in Alberta and globally, ecological destruction has only intensified.4 Ralph Lidskog and Claire Waterton, ‘The Anthropocene: A narrative in the making’, in Environment an (.).Waters et al., ‘The Anthropocene is functionally and stratigraphically distinct from the H (.) Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer, ‘The Anthropocene’, IGBP Global Change Newsletter, 41 (2000), (.) We would not simply write about the abuse of a family member, so why would we do this when we witness abuse of the land? Rather, ‘righting’ surely means aiming for a ‘right relationship’ with nature, to use the Quaker John Woolman’s term, 1 and any right relationship involves deep connection, active protection, respect, reciprocity, and care anything less is dysfunction. ‘Writing’ is not automatically the same as ‘righting’. But on the other hand, I can’t help but think the statement reveals the depth of the problem-and that is modern culture’s abstract relationship with nature. On one hand, of course he had a point: the job of writers is indeed to write, and this is a powerful act. I have mulled over this reply many times since then. Rudy Wiebe, who was one of the keynote speakers, replied, ‘the role of the writer is not to directly act it is to write about it’. ![]() ![]() But at one point, I expressed my frustration at the lack of direct action against the destruction. At this time, there was still little open discussion of this problem, or even acknowledgement that there was a problem, and it felt like a relief to talk about it. 1 Quaker Earthcare Witness, Living in Right Relationship (n.d.), (.)ġIn 2007, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s annual conference, held in Grande Prairie, was themed ‘Writing/Righting the Land’, and it focused on the ecological destruction caused by Alberta’s oilsands. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On October 26, 2011, Ladd was among various staffers fired from KLOS following the acquisition of station owner Citadel Broadcasting by Cumulus Media.
